First Contact | This week in 1918...

Updated: Nov 11, 2018

17 - 23 June

For the last two weeks the 12th continued its work on the front. Records are scant on details during this period except to mention the 12th moved ninety miles northeast to Flin airfield on 13 June 1918 to support the famed 42d "Rainbow" Infantry Division. (Click here to learn more about the 42nd)

Tuesday, 19 June marks the first air battle between the 12th and the German Air Force. Pilots 2nd Lt Phillip B. Schnur & 1st Lt P. E. West with Observers 1st Lt Stephen Wilkins Thompson & 1st Lt Elmer R. Haslett were attacked by 3 enemy aircraft. The engagement ended in a draw but it certainly would not be the last.
